[Financial News]  Korea’s address system, known as “K-Address,” is making its way into Uzbekistan after beating out European countries including France and Spain. The win is also expected to open the door for South Korean information technology (IT) companies to take part in projects to build local address information systems.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 4th that South Korea had been selected for a project worth about $330,000 to provide technical support for building a national address register, commissioned by Uzbekistan’s cadastral agency. The consulting project aims to modernize Uzbekistan’s address-related laws, institutions and technological foundations.
Uzbekistan commissioned the project through an international competitive bidding process. South Korea won the contract after competing in the final round against five European countries: France, Spain, Norway, Poland and Hungary.
South Korea has continued its cooperation with Uzbekistan to support the modernization of the country’s address system. Last year, it assessed the feasibility of an address system modernization project and signed a related memorandum of understanding (MOU) in September. This year, it also provided training and consulting for local government officials.
The significance of this win lies in laying the groundwork for follow-up overseas projects that use South Korea’s address information technology. The project awarded so far is at the consulting stage, establishing legal, institutional and technological foundations; it is not the main project to directly build an address information system.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to use this project as a stepping stone to support the participation of South Korean IT and address information companies in follow-up national address register projects and projects linked to multilateral development banks.
Korea Land and Geospatial InformatiX Corporation (LX), the project’s lead agency, will hold a project launch briefing and conduct the first field survey locally on the 5th with Uzbekistan’s cadastral agency. It also plans to inspect the site selected for the pilot project. From the 22nd to the 28th, it will invite six officials responsible for digital affairs and addresses, including the agency’s deputy head, to South Korea and share its experience in revising address-related laws and institutions and its approach to operating an address information management system.
Kim Min-jae, Vice Minister of the Interior and Safety, said, “Winning this project in Uzbekistan is recognition on the international stage of the excellence of the Republic of Korea’s K-Address system.” He added, “We will continue to strengthen public-private cooperation and support companies’ overseas expansion so that K-Address can spread to countries around the world as a global standard.”
