[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump said he would accept the results of the midterm elections held on the 3rd (local time). He signaled that he would work with the Democrats, who will control Congress going forward.
In an interview with The New York Times (NYT) that day, he was asked whether he would accept the election results and replied, “I am fully willing to accept them.” He added, “I will work with the Democrats. I look forward to working with them,” and said, “Perhaps we can reach some kind of agreement.”
The interview was conducted by phone at 10:30 p.m. that day. Trump, who was watching the election results come in, mentioned Republican candidates Darlene Graham and Ken Paxton, whom he had supported. The two candidates were running in the Republican Senate races in South Carolina and Texas, respectively, but projections based on the results coming in on the 3rd showed both would lose.
Trump said, “As I’m talking to you now, I’m watching the election results,” and added, “I saw Darlene lose. Wow, that’s surprising. What do you think would have happened if Lindsey (former Senator Graham) had run?” Darlene is the younger sibling of Lindsey Graham, who died last July. Trump said he thought Lindsey Graham, who had been one of his closest allies, “probably would have won if he had run” in this election.
CNN and NBC, the U.S. networks covering the election results that day, projected at around 10 p.m. that the Democrats would win at least a majority (218 seats) of the 435 seats in the House. NBC projected that the Democrats would secure 244 House seats. If the Democrats do take a majority in the House, they will take control of it for the first time in four years, since 2022.
Decision Desk HQ, a local election forecasting organization, put the Democrats’ chances of winning the Senate at 92.9% as of 10:30 p.m. that day.
In an interview with Fox News shortly before vote counting began that day, Trump said, “I think the (election) results will be better than people think.” On Truth Social that same day, he wrote, “I wasn’t on the ballot in this election. If I had been, we would have won by a huge margin.”
