[Financial News] Ahead of the Ohio gubernatorial election during the U.S. midterms, the ruling-party candidate who aired a harshly attack-oriented ad featuring the opposition candidate’s mother eventually went down to defeat.
On the 3rd (local time), NBC and other U.S. broadcasters projected that Amy Acton, the opposition Democratic candidate, had defeated Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and won.
Earlier, during the campaign, Ramaswamy had drawn controversy by airing a malicious one-minute ad featuring Acton’s mother. In the ad, her mother took aim at her daughter, Acton, saying, “As a mother, it’s not easy to say this, but my daughter is a liar.”
But after it emerged that Acton had been abused by her stepfather, including sexually, during her childhood, and had been separated from her mother and stepfather at age 12 as a result, a fierce backlash ensued. It was also revealed that after the stepfather was indicted, her mother left her daughter and continued living with him until his death, and Ramaswamy faced a backlash.
When the ad became a problem, Republicans quickly distanced themselves from it, fearing the fallout could spread to other races. But U.S. President Donald Trump instead defended the airing of Ramaswamy’s ad, sparking further controversy.
