[Financial News] In the U.S. midterm elections held on the 3rd (local time), Democrats defied expectations and captured a U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina.
According to vote-counting data released by NBC, with 87.1% of the vote expected to be counted, Democratic candidate Annie Andrews received 51.0%, leading incumbent Republican Senator Darlene Graham, who received 46.9%, by 4.1 percentage points.
The election analysis organization Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ) also called the race for Andrews, projecting a victory over Senator Graham.
Andrews, a former pediatrician turned politician, made healthcare and childcare costs and gun safety major campaign issues. This is the first time in 28 years, since 1998, that a Democratic candidate has won a South Carolina Senate race.
