[Financial News] A Democratic victory in the U.S. midterm elections appears all but certain. In particular, the party’s chances of reclaiming the House majority for the first time in four years were put at nearly 100%.
With votes being counted in the U.S. midterm elections held on the 3rd (local time), the Democratic candidate was also projected to win the Senate race in battleground South Carolina, a Republican stronghold.
According to NBC, with 86% of the votes counted, Democratic candidate Annie Andrews was expected to defeat Republican candidate Darlene Graham, who had 46.9% of the vote, with 51%. Graham is the younger sister of former Senator Lindsey Graham, one of President Trump’s closest allies, who died suddenly last July.
President Trump arranged for Lindsey Graham’s younger sister to take over the Senate seat left vacant by Lindsey Graham’s death, then helped her become the Republican Senate candidate through a formal special primary election.
The loss is therefore a double blow for President Trump. South Carolina is a Republican stronghold and has not elected a Democratic senator since the 2000s.
In a state like that, the candidate President Trump pushed despite opposition within his party was ultimately defeated by the Democratic candidate. In the 2024 presidential election, South Carolina backed President Trump by an 18-percentage-point margin.
Several U.S. election forecasting organizations had been somewhat more optimistic about Graham’s chances of winning, given the strength of Republican support in South Carolina.
Securing the South Carolina Senate seat has brought Democrats one step closer to reclaiming the Senate majority. Democrats need a net gain of four seats in the Senate to become the majority party.
CNN reported, “Republicans and Democrats are saying the same thing: Democrats are headed for a landslide, and the Republican losses are larger than expected.”
