【Financial News, Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop, Reporter】Overseas healthcare experts joined efforts to find ways to address healthcare and caregiving challenges in an aging society at a senior hospital in Chuncheon where AI detects patient falls.
According to Gangwon State Technopark on the 4th, overseas experts attending the 2026 Gangwon State AI Healthcare Global Forum visited Chuncheon City Geriatric Hospital on October 29 and examined examples of AI technology being used in public healthcare, as well as the state of medical care and caregiving for older adults. Gangwon State Technopark arranged the visit so the experts could see firsthand the technologies and services needed in real-world medical settings.
What caught the visiting delegation’s attention was an AI-based fall detection system developed by Geomexsoft. The system was introduced at the hospital about three years ago in connection with Gangwon National University Hospital, and regular updates have steadily improved its operational stability. This year, with government budget support, the hospital expanded the system’s coverage by installing it on one floor of a new building.
Chuncheon City Geriatric Hospital provides treatment and long-term care services to about 145 inpatients. That day, hospital director Joo Young-su explained the main conditions affecting inpatients, including cerebrovascular disease, brain injuries and dementia, the management of long-term inpatients, and examples of care centered on older patients.
Participants exchanged views on local healthcare challenges brought on by an aging population, including a growing number of people with chronic diseases, shortages of medical personnel and the workload on medical staff. They also discussed the need for home-based medical care, which helps people receive medical treatment and care at home, and ways to connect these services with the community. Gangwon State Technopark plans to continue engaging with medical institutions and experts at home and abroad and broaden the foundation for applying technologies developed by AI healthcare companies in the province to real-world medical settings.
Yoon Wan-tae, head of the Future Business Division at Gangwon State Technopark, said, “The biggest takeaway was sharing with overseas experts the challenges facing regional hospitals, where the number of older patients is rising while medical personnel are in short supply,” adding, “We will expand opportunities for field validation and commercialization so that technologies developed by companies in the province and proven in real-world settings, such as fall detection systems, can reach more hospitals and care settings.”
