【Financial News, Sokcho = Kim Gi-seop, reporter】When cold winds blow, sandfish and sand lance—regulars on tables along the East Sea coast—will welcome visitors to Sokcho Port for 10 days.
According to Sokcho City on the 4th, the 17th Sokcho Sandfish and Sand Lance Festival will be held from the 6th to the 15th in the area around the parking lot in front of E-Mart, on the port grounds at Sokcho Port. Hosted by the Sokcho City Fisheries Cooperative and organized by the Sokcho Cheongho Gillnet Association, the festival aims to promote local seafood and boost fishermen’s incomes.
The venue will feature a direct-sales market where visitors can buy sandfish and sand lance to take home, as well as a food market where they can sample them on the spot. Free tastings of in-season seafood and pumba performances will add to the attractions.
This year, organizers are stepping up on-site management so visitors can buy with confidence. They will put up signs displaying the day’s market prices at a glance and regularly check whether prices are posted at sales booths and food stalls, as well as the quality of customer service.
To ensure visitors’ safety and convenience, organizers will separate traffic routes at the venue entrances and exits to manage vehicle flow, and will also operate a general information booth and an on-site safety management control room. In cooperation with relevant agencies and organizations, they plan to manage traffic and oversee environmental and sanitation measures, including garbage collection, while responding to any inconveniences at the venue.
Sokcho Mayor Lee Byung-sun said, “We’ll announce the day’s market prices on signs and regularly check that prices are posted, so everyone will be able to enjoy sandfish and sand lance with confidence. I’ll make sure everything is carefully taken care of so the festival gives fishermen an opportunity to expand their markets and lets visitors enjoy the event in a safe, clean venue.”
