[Hanoi, Vietnam—Correspondent Kim Jun-seok] Vietnam’s leading information and communications technology company, FPT Group, has begun full-scale commissioning of its semiconductor packaging and testing plant in Bac Ninh City. It is expected to secure its first chip-testing order from a Korean company, which would be the facility’s first contract with an overseas customer.
Local media reported on the 4th that FPT Group announced the previous day that it would begin trial operations at its semiconductor packaging and testing plant in Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park, Bac Ninh City. FPT officially said, “We plan to undertake our first semiconductor chip testing order for a Korean partner.” Along with the start of trial operations at the plant, this order is the first overseas order FPT has disclosed and is expected to mark the starting point for its business of providing semiconductor testing services to external customers. However, details about the Korean partner were not disclosed.
The plant, operated by FPT Analysis Technologies, a subsidiary of FPT, has a floor area of 1,600 square meters and is equipped with six production lines capable of processing up to 300 million semiconductor chips a year. Initially, it will focus on functional testing of semiconductor chips and assessments of their quality and reliability.
The plant’s main equipment includes ATE testers, an automated test system, linked with handlers that separate and move components, allowing the chips to be precisely classified as pass or fail. The test lines have also been installed in a Class 10,000 cleanroom, corresponding to ISO Class 7 under international standards, to minimize fine dust and other environmental factors.
In addition to functional testing, the plant can also conduct tests to verify chip durability and reliability, including high-temperature operating tests, temperature-change tests, and combined thermal and humidity stress evaluations. FPT is also researching applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to automate the entire chip-test program development process, from data standardization and environment setup to evaluation of results.
In terms of staffing, FPT has built an organization of experts and engineers with extensive experience in semiconductor testing and packaging. The team includes experts with many years of experience working at Intel’s plant in Vietnam. Starting this December, FPT also plans to partner with FPT Polytechnic to run a training program that will give students hands-on experience on an actual semiconductor testing production line.
FPT plans to strengthen its advanced testing capabilities and develop more sophisticated packaging technologies. Its goal is to build a semiconductor packaging and testing ecosystem and provide related services to customers in Vietnam and abroad.
