[Financial News] The voltage-source ultra-high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, considered a key technology for localizing the West Coast HVDC project, will go on display at an exhibition venue in Gwangju.
Hyosung Heavy Industries said on the 4th that it will take part in BIXPO (Bitgaram International Electric Power Technology Expo) 2026, held from the 4th through the 6th at the Kim Daejung Convention Center in Gwangju, and showcase next-generation power grid solutions, including HVDC and solid-state transformers (SSTs). The company will put voltage-source HVDC, a key technology in the government's effort to localize the West Coast HVDC system, front and center. It will introduce key technologies including an HVDC system with valves and controllers, a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) that stabilizes the power grid, the SST, a next-generation power conversion device, and its AI-based power facility asset management platform, ARMOUR+. Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to present its latest technologies and development achievements to customers and industry officials visiting the exhibition and expand technical exchanges.
HVDC localization has long been an area highly dependent on foreign companies. Key HVDC equipment has been supplied by a handful of global companies, including Hitachi, Ltd., Siemens AG and General Electric (GE). In August, following an expert evaluation, KEPCO selected Hyosung Heavy Industries as the company to take part in the localization demonstration of valves and controllers. The equipment developed is expected to be used in the Saemangeum–Seohwaseong HVDC project. KEPCO plans to demonstrate the equipment on the actual power grid and then build it into a driver of overseas exports.
Hyosung Heavy Industries is also expanding cooperation in the SST sector. On October 30, it signed a global strategic partnership agreement with Siemens AG of Germany and agreed to jointly pursue AI data center solutions combining SST with Siemens AG's energy management system (EMS). Under the same agreement, the companies also agreed to connect ARMOUR+ with Siemens AG's distribution grid management platform Electrification X and establish a system for integrated diagnostics of equipment ranging from ultra-high voltage to low voltage.
BIXPO 2026, organized by Korea Electric Power Corporation, is a global power and energy industry exhibition attended by around 200 companies from Korea and abroad.
A Hyosung Heavy Industries official said, “This exhibition will provide an opportunity to introduce the core next-generation power grid technologies and solutions our company has to customers at home and abroad,” adding, “We will continue to advance power technologies such as SST and HVDC and strengthen our competitiveness to lead the future power grid market.”
