Divided into three sections—genes, the body and society—the book explains everyday behavior through scientific research and observations of animals. It introduces phenomena such as becoming more reluctant to try new music or foods with age, and female baboons choosing kind males as mates.
The author emphasizes that human behavior cannot be explained by genes or hormones alone. He focuses on the interplay in which society and culture affect the body and brain, while individuals’ behavior in turn changes their surroundings. Through the similarities between humans and other animals, he revisits the meaning of love, desire and cooperation. Translated by Kim Hee-jung.
