[Financial News] Jon Ossoff (Democrat-Georgia) won reelection in the U.S. midterm elections held on the 3rd (local time), U.S. broadcaster NBC reported.
At about 7:31 p.m. that day, NBC declared that Ossoff had won the Georgia Senate race, defeating Republican U.S. Representative Mike Collins, who had been supported by President Donald Trump.
Georgia closed its polls at 7 p.m. that day and began counting votes. NBC declared Ossoff the winner about 30 minutes later.
The Associated Press also declared Ossoff the winner at about 7:55 p.m. According to the AP, with 47% of the vote counted, Ossoff had 64.5% (1,353,666 votes), while Collins had just 35.5% (746,561 votes).
Georgia is one of the major competitive states in the United States, but it was not a major battleground in this election, as it was considered relatively likely to go to the Democrats.
Born in 1987, Ossoff was elected in 2020 and entered the Senate for the first time. If his victory is confirmed, he will serve a second term.
His successive strong performances have raised his national profile. Some say he could be among the Democratic presidential candidates in 2028.
The Associated Press reported that in Virginia, Democratic Senator Mark Warner successfully defended his seat and won a fourth term. Since Virginia is a state where support for the Democrats is relatively strong, Warner's victory was expected.
