[Financial News] President Donald Trump’s approval rating hit the lowest level among incumbent presidents at elections held since 2008.
Voters in the U.S. midterm elections held on the 3rd (local time) also named the economy and the state of democracy as the country’s most important issues, the results showed.
According to an exit poll of voters conducted by polling firm SSRS at the behest of major media outlets including NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and the Associated Press, 39% of respondents cited the “economy” (39%) as the most important issue facing the United States.
The “state of democracy” was the second most frequently selected issue, at 32%, followed by “immigration” (14%), “health care” (8%), foreign policy (4%) and crime (3%).
Asked why they voted that day, 43% of respondents chose “to express opposition to President Trump,” while 41% said “Trump did not influence my vote.” Just 16% said they had voted to express support for President Trump.
Asked whether “government corruption” was a factor in their choice this time, 54% of respondents said it was a “decisive factor,” while another 36% said it was a “major factor.”
On the issue of the “cost of living,” 49% said it was a “decisive factor” and 39% a “major factor.”
President Trump’s job approval rating stood at 38%. NBC noted that this was the lowest approval rating among incumbent presidents during presidential and midterm elections since President George W. Bush, whose rating plunged to 27% in 2008.
The two major parties, the Republicans and Democrats, had similar ratings. The Democratic Party’s approval rating was 46% (54% disapproval), while the Republican Party’s was 41% (59% disapproval).
