【Financial News correspondent Lee Byung-cheol in New York】 In the U.S. midterm elections, Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff won reelection in Georgia, a key battleground state. By defeating the Republican candidate in a state that President Donald Trump won in the 2024 presidential election, the Democrats held on to an important seat in their bid to regain a Senate majority.
The Associated Press reported on the 3rd (local time) that Ossoff defeated Republican candidate Mike Collins in the Georgia U.S. Senate race. At 7:55 p.m. Eastern time that day (9:55 a.m. on the 4th in South Korea), the AP called the race for Ossoff.
Ossoff was the only Democratic incumbent senator seeking reelection in a state Trump won in the 2024 presidential election. The seat was considered one the Democrats had to hold to regain the Senate majority from Republicans.
Early in the race, Ossoff’s reelection prospects were uncertain. Georgia was a state that gave Trump a victory, and Republicans were mounting an all-out campaign to retake the seat.
But Ossoff took the lead in the campaign, significantly outraising Collins. Collins, a former House member who had won reelection, secured Trump’s formal endorsement during a prolonged Republican primary, but could not overcome Ossoff in the general election.
Ossoff drew nationwide attention during the campaign by strongly criticizing President Trump’s policies and handling of the government. He sought to rally Democratic supporters by making criticism of Trump the central message of his campaign.
