【Financial News, Jeju—Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】With around 250,000 Taiwanese tourists visiting Jeju through September this year, the island’s tourism industry is expanding its efforts to attract visitors into central Taiwan. The strategy is to build on the direct Jeju–Taichung route, launched last year, and ties with the local tourism industry to develop Jeju travel packages.
According to the Jeju Tourism Association on the 4th, it took part in the 2026 ATTA Taichung International Tourism Expo, held at the Taichung International Exhibition and Convention Center in Taiwan from October 30 through the 2nd of this month, promoting Jeju travel packages and discussing ways to cooperate with local travel-industry partners.
Taiwan is Jeju’s largest source of foreign tourists after China. According to the Jeju Tourism Association, 161,842 Taiwanese tourists had visited Jeju by the end of September last year, compared with around 250,000 over the same period this year. Taiwanese visitors accounted for more than 10% of all foreign tourists last year.
The expo is part of a follow-up effort to extend visitor-attraction activities, previously centered on the capital Taipei, into central Taiwan. The Jeju Tourism Association signed a friendship agreement with the Taichung Travel Trade Association last July, laying the groundwork for cooperation on tourism exchanges and travel-package development.
Air access has also been secured. Taiwanese low-cost carrier Tigerair Taiwan began operating a direct Jeju–Taichung route in July last year. With direct flights connecting Jeju and central Taiwan, conditions have improved for developing Jeju travel packages with local tourism-industry partners.

During the expo, the tourism association ran a Jeju promotion booth showcasing the island’s natural scenery and experiential tourism offerings. On the 1st, it introduced Jeju’s tourism resources to local tourism-industry representatives and discussed potential cooperation on developing travel packages and expanding exchanges of tourists.
The expo is an autumn tourism event hosted by Taichung City’s travel industry and other organizations. According to the local organizers in Taiwan, 250 booths were set up, including around 30 travel agencies. Airlines, travel agencies, and domestic and international tourism companies took part to showcase overseas travel packages.
The challenge for Jeju’s tourism industry is to turn the rise in Taiwanese visitors into actual tourism spending in the region. It needs to leverage direct flights and local agreements to expand not only packages for individual tourists but also longer-stay and experience-based trips.
Kang Dong-hun, president of the Jeju Tourism Association, said, “Building on the local agreement signed last July, we will continue exchanges with Taichung’s travel industry and step up tailored promotions to attract Taiwanese tourists.”
