[Financial News] SM Group will introduce a QR code-based smart safety and health management system at around 60 construction sites nationwide. The group aims to strengthen on-site safety management by making it easy for workers to check hazards before starting work.
SM Group’s construction division said on the 4th that it would expand the Smart Safety and Health Management System to all its sites to strengthen safety and health management and operational efficiency at construction sites.
The system allows workers to scan QR codes attached to their hard hats with a smartphone and access key safety and health information for each site, along with risk assessment details for before work begins. It replaces the previous practice of posting notices by attaching documents to bulletin boards with a digital system.
In particular, the system enables workers to identify hazards themselves and take part in safety and health activities during pre-work safety meetings (TBMs). The company expects this to encourage information sharing on site and improve the effectiveness of efforts to prevent safety incidents.
Last October, SM Group’s construction division first implemented the system at the Suwon Station Honorsville Time One apartment construction site in Pyeongdong, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, which is being built by Dongah Construction Industrial Co., Ltd. Starting with that site, the division plans to roll it out gradually at around 60 sites nationwide that it manages and operates.
The introduction of the system is part of SM Group’s ongoing artificial intelligence transformation (AX) strategy. The group is using artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to improve operational efficiency and productivity while strengthening its safety and quality management capabilities.
To that end, the construction division regularly holds an AI Work Innovation Contest and shares best practices and ideas at monthly meetings of company presidents. The Smart Safety and Health Management System is one of the outstanding initiatives selected through the contest.
“It is significant that we have created new conditions in which site safety managers can substantially reduce routine tasks and focus on their core responsibilities, such as identifying hazards and taking proactive action,” said Jo Yu-seon, head of SM Group’s construction division. “We will continue to drive work innovation by exploring ways to use AI in various areas, including safety, construction and quality management, and assessing how effective those applications are at each site.”
