[Financial News] A story about a Korean tourist who says they were subjected to racism by a group at the next table in a restaurant in Portugal has sparked outrage.
On the 3rd, JTBC’s “Scandal Supervisor” featured the story of A, who said they had recently returned from a trip to Portugal.
A said they had been subjected to racism at a restaurant by a group of other diners who appeared to be a family.
According to A, the group called out “Chino (Chinese), Coreano (Korean)” at A, made a gesture of pulling their eyes sideways, and also mentioned Japanese people. A claims they also pulled the corners of their eyes up and down in a gesture that seemed to distinguish people by country.
Pulling the corners of the eyes sideways is widely regarded as a racist gesture mocking the appearance of East Asians.
Angered by the group’s behavior, A shouted, “Say that again,” in protest, but they burst out laughing and reportedly continued making slant-eye gestures as they laughed.
When A explained the situation in English to a restaurant employee, the group reportedly made excuses, telling the employee, “We were looking because you have nice skin, and we didn’t make slant-eye gestures.”
But when another employee said they had witnessed what happened, the group finally left the restaurant.
A posted a video of the incident on social media (SNS), and the video reportedly spread overseas as well.
Meanwhile, given that the group spoke Spanish, it has also been suggested that they may have been tourists rather than Portuguese.
