【Financial News Daegu=Kim Jang-wook, reporter】Daegu City is stepping up efforts to provide residents in the eastern part of the city with forest recreation spaces close to home, promote balanced development between the east and west, and improve living conditions in its innovation city.
Daegu City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Second Arboretum Development Project on the morning of the 4th at the foot of Choryesan in Sukcheon-dong, Dong-gu, and began full-scale construction.
The Second Arboretum is being built with a total project cost of 41.7 billion won, including the cost of constructing the visitor center. It is scheduled for completion in June 2028 and opening in July. Plans include a visitor center for integrated arboretum management and education, as well as botanical display gardens where visitors can enjoy a variety of flowers and trees, a wetland garden, an ecological trail, and parking facilities.
Construction on the visitor center is scheduled to begin this December. Its selection in the Korea Forest Service’s 2024 call for proposals for the Demonstration Project for Wooden Buildings Using Domestic Timber secured 6.5 billion won in state funding and eased the city’s financial burden. The city plans to build the visitor center as a nature-friendly wooden structure using domestic timber and develop it into a local eco-friendly landmark.
Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stressed, “The Second Arboretum will be a place of rest where citizens can enjoy nature close to their everyday lives, as well as a site for ecological education where future generations can grow by experiencing forests and plants firsthand. We will ensure it is built without a hitch as an eco-friendly landmark linking Palgongsan and the innovation city, improving citizens’ quality of life and the city’s competitiveness.”
In particular, the Second Arboretum will go beyond simply offering visitors a place to look around, specializing instead in forest education and ecological experiences for children and adolescents. The city plans to diversify forest and plant experience programs and develop tailored ecological content in partnership with nearby educational and youth facilities, including Wagle Wagle Children’s World and the National Youth Career and Vocational Training Experience Center. It will create a leisure and educational space that the whole family can enjoy together.
The city plans to develop the Second Arboretum into a leading forest recreation hub in the eastern region, linking Palgongsan and the innovation city. It will also connect the arboretum with nearby large-scale shopping and tourist facilities, including Shinsegae Outlet, and foster it as a key part of tourism in the eastern region, bringing together shopping, recreation, and experiences.
A resident surnamed Seong from Goejeon-dong, Dong-gu, expressed satisfaction, saying, “I expect the Second Arboretum to become a precious place where Dong-gu residents can enjoy nature close to home and rest comfortably. I’m also very pleased that there will be a family retreat where people can take walks and enjoy outings with their children.”
The resident also said, “I expect this to provide an opportunity for the innovation city, established following the relocation of public institutions, to develop further and become more vibrant. I hope the arboretum will be beautifully developed into an attractive and pleasant place that all citizens will enjoy visiting.”
