[Financial News] A man in his 60s who collapsed after food blocked his airway at a wedding hall in Jeju survived thanks to first aid from a part-time worker.
According to JIBS on the 3rd, a man in his 60s, identified only as A, suddenly collapsed while eating at the wedding hall where Kang Tae-seong, a third-year nursing student at Jeju National University, was working part-time.
Food had blocked A’s airway, leaving him unable to breathe. People nearby gathered and tried CPR, but it had no effect.
After checking the man’s condition, Kang determined that it was an airway obstruction, not cardiac arrest, and immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver.
After several minutes of first aid, A regained consciousness. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment.
Kang explained that the man’s lips had turned blue from a lack of oxygen, and that he showed no signs of breathing or abdominal movement, leading Kang to judge the situation as extremely critical.
Kang, a former reserve major with the Republic of Korea Army Special Warfare Command, is a nontraditional student who returned to university after turning 30 to pursue his dream of becoming a nurse.
It was not an easy choice as a father of three, but he is said to have taken on the challenge with his family’s trust and support.
“If I encounter an emergency like this in the future, I think I’ll respond proactively,” Kang said. “I want to be a nurse with a cool head and a warm heart.”
