[Financial News] Iran’s security chief said on the 3rd (local time) that the U.S. response to Iran’s demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming peace talks was insufficient.
Iranian hard-liner Mohsen Rezaee, secretary-general of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), wrote on X that “the U.S. response to Iran’s rights and demands was unconvincing.”
He stressed that “the United States must fully and explicitly accept Iran’s seven conditions and put them into action,” adding, “Only in that case will the Strait of Hormuz reopen.”
Iran recently proposed a so-called “Two-day Plan” to the United States through Qatar, an intermediary. It condensed into a two-day schedule the seven-step proposal Iran had put forward earlier, in September.
Under the proposal, on the first day the United States must lift its blockade of Iranian ports, approve a sanctions waiver for sales of Iranian oil, and cancel all new sanctions.
The plan’s main points are that, once the U.S. measures are implemented, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz on the second day and restore normal maritime traffic, followed by further negotiations on other issues.
While Qatar was coordinating the positions of the United States and Iran over the proposal, the United States attacked Qeshm Island in southern Iran the previous day.
U.S. officials described the attack as a defensive measure intended to prevent Iran from attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran protested the U.S. strike on Qeshm Island.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said, “Resuming the war will benefit no one.”
Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is leading negotiations with the United States, warned that “Iran has its finger on the trigger and is ready for combat,” while Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, stressed that Iran had a legitimate right to self-defense following the U.S. strike.
