[Financial News] The story of a restaurant owner who gave food free of charge to a young man who rushed in late at night after closing time to find water kimchi for his critically ill grandmother has touched hearts online.
Yonhap News TV reported on the 4th that a special story experienced by A, a self-employed restaurant owner, was recently posted on the social networking service (SNS) Threads.
According to A, at around 10:30 p.m. on October 31 last month, a call came in while A was alone tidying the counter after all the employees had left for the day. The man on the other end of the line said urgently, “I’m on my way now. Grandma won’t eat anything else; she’ll only have a little water kimchi,” then asked almost pleadingly, “Could I buy some water kimchi?”
A quickly picked up the water kimchi, went down to the first floor, and waited for the man. A little while later, a young man came running up, panting, barefoot and wearing slippers. He pulled a crumpled 10,000-won bill from inside his clothes and handed it over.
But A firmly refused the money. “Don’t worry about the money. Just hurry back and take care of your grandmother first,” A said, sending him off with only the water kimchi in his hands. The young man bowed repeatedly in thanks, then ran off into the darkness.
The moving story continued a week later. One day, a group of about 25 customers arrived at the restaurant without a reservation. Among the group, who came in dressed in black and with a subdued air, a familiar face approached A. It was the very same young man who had received the water kimchi a week earlier.
The young man greeted A, saying, “We held my grandmother’s funeral and came back. I’m so grateful for the water kimchi you gave us the other day.” Then, pointing A out to the bereaved family members with him, he introduced A as “the owner who gave us the water kimchi for free last time.”
Only then did A realize why the young man had been so desperate to find water kimchi in the middle of the night. A recalled, “For a moment, I wondered what was happening, and my heart swelled with emotion. I was glad I could offer even a little warmth on her final journey. May the deceased rest in peace.”
People who read the story praised the gesture, responding with comments such as, “It must have been the last and only food the grandmother, who was nearing the end of her life, ate”; “It’s so heartwarming that the family returned to the restaurant after the funeral”; “A story that feels so human in this harsh world”; and “The owner’s kindness helped preserve a family’s final memory.”
