[Financial News] There have been a series of incidents at marathons in South Korea and abroad in which participants in their 20s collapse during a race and die. This time, a woman in her 20s competing in the New York City Marathon in the United States collapsed about 3.6 km from the finish line and died.
According to The New York Times (NYT), the New York Post and other outlets on the 3rd (local time), Rachel Apa, 24, who was competing in the New York City Marathon held on the 1st, suddenly collapsed near Central Park during the race. She was taken to hospital but ultimately died.
Apa’s father said the cause of death was rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which muscle damage, such as that caused by strenuous exercise, releases toxic substances into the body. In severe cases, it can lead to complications such as acute kidney injury and become life-threatening.
The New York City Marathon is one of the world’s largest marathons, and at least 60,000 people took part this year.
This was Apa’s first marathon. She reportedly took part in the race while raising donations for an organization to honor her grandfather, who died of Parkinson’s disease.
Apa was reportedly in good physical condition, having played field hockey in a top-tier college sports league during her university years, among other things.
Earlier, in South Korea, a woman in her 20s collapsed during the “2026 Seoul Race” held in Jongno District, Seoul, on the 11th of last month and died the following day.
