[Financial News] The People Power Party on the 3rd once again announced plans for an indiscriminate filibuster (an unlimited debate permitted under the National Assembly Act to obstruct legislative proceedings). The move came after the Democratic Party of Korea adopted the “Special Counsel Bill on Fabricated Prosecution” as its official position and decided to pass it at the plenary session on the 5th.
Jeong Jeom-sig, floor leader of the People Power Party, told reporters at the National Assembly that, regarding the plan to pass the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution on the 5th, “If the special counsel bill is put on the plenary agenda, we will consider every option, including filibusters, for every bill scheduled to be introduced that day.”
The Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution aims to reexamine cases in which allegations of fabricated investigations and prosecutions have been raised, including the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea case and the Daejang-dong Development Corruption Scandal, both involving President Lee Jae-myung. The People Power Party has protested, saying the bill is intended to undermine the trials of the president and his aides. The Democratic Party of Korea is reportedly said to have removed the “dismissal of prosecution” clause from the special counsel bill in response to criticism that its purpose was to cancel the president’s trial.
Jeong, the floor leader, said, “Today, the Democratic Party of Korea adopted the ‘Special Prosecutor Act for Dismissal of Prosecutions’ as its official position at its lawmakers’ caucus meeting. Its intention is clear: an attempt to bury the trials of the president and his aides.” He added, “The ruling party’s lawmakers gathered and, moreover, buried the rule of law in the Republic of Korea at a caucus meeting.”
Jeong, the floor leader, also criticized Kim Min-seok, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, for apologizing over allegations of Shincheonji involvement that he had raised at the party convention, saying they lacked evidence. Jeong called it “an arbitrary decision to sweep the matter under the rug and move on.” He continued, “Today, the Democratic Party of Korea buried both the Shincheonji allegations and the president’s trial. The party is now an enemy of the rule of law.”
