[Financial News] Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is seeking to expand its cooperation with Korea's AI ecosystem by holding its flagship artificial intelligence (AI) technology event, 'Advancing AI,' in Korea for the first time.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and AMD used the event to flesh out plans for advancing key cooperation initiatives, including building AI computing infrastructure using homegrown neural processing units (NPUs), establishing an AI research center, and training talent.
MSIT said it had held a steering committee for its memorandum of understanding (MOU) with AMD in conjunction with the 'AMD Advancing AI World Tour Seoul 2026,' held on the 4th at the Westin Seoul Parnas Hotel.
The steering committee was convened to review implementation of the MOU signed last July and discuss plans for future work. The two sides had also reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in AI semiconductors during AMD Chair Lisa Su's visit to Korea on the 7th of last month.
The meeting was attended by Lee Do-gyu, Director General of MSIT's ICT Policy Office, and Keith Strier, AMD's Senior Vice President of Global AI Markets. The two sides discussed progress and concrete implementation plans for key cooperation initiatives, including building heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure combining AMD's central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) with homegrown NPUs, establishing an AMD AI research center, supporting universities, and training AI talent.
About 1,300 people preregistered for AMD's AI technology event, held in Korea for the first time that day. Domestic companies working with AMD on AI computing infrastructure, including LG Electronics, Moreh, and MangoBoost, also took part and shared relevant technologies and the results of their cooperation.
Second Vice Minister Ryu Jemyoung visited the event venue, viewed displays of domestic companies' AI technologies, and expressed his commitment to expanding cooperation with AMD.
Vice Minister Ryu said, "AMD's holding its flagship event, 'Advancing AI,' in Korea for the first time means that it considers Korea an important AI cooperation partner. I will make every effort to ensure that the cooperation initiatives proceed without a hitch and lead to growth for domestic AI semiconductor companies and stronger competitiveness for the AI ecosystem."
