[Financial News] Ewha Womans University said on the 3rd that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the university on October 30, toured its advanced quantum nanoscience research facilities and discussed ways to cooperate with the next generation of female scientists. Merz, who visited South Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific German Business Conference, became the second sitting German chancellor to visit Ewha and wrapped up his Asian tour with the research-site visit.
Chancellor Merz visited the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Quantum Nanoscience Research Group, located in Ewha Womans University's Research Cooperation Building, and heard about its key achievements from group director Andreas Heinrich, a world-renowned authority in the field. The group conducts research into advanced technologies for controlling phenomena that occur at the atomic scale, the smallest unit of matter. Merz also tried moving atoms himself with an advanced instrument, a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), in a specialized laboratory completely isolated from vibrations.
After the demonstration, Chancellor Merz met with four next-generation female scientists affiliated with Ewha, including master's and doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. The scientists explained the importance of basic research and shared their experiences in the lab. Merz expressed keen interest and stressed the importance of nurturing talent who will lead future science and technology.
Ewha plans to use Chancellor Merz's visit as an opportunity to further expand its education and research cooperation with German universities and research institutions, and to step up joint research between the two countries and the cultivation of global talent.
