[Financial News] A man in his 50s who threatened to go on a knife rampage at Cheong Wa Dae and the National Police Agency, among other places, has been detained. The court found that he posed a significant flight risk and a high risk of reoffending, citing the seriousness of the crime and his lack of social ties.
According to legal circles on the 3rd, Yang Hwan-seung, a senior judge in charge of warrants at Seoul Eastern District Court, issued an arrest warrant that day for A, a man in his 50s accused of violating the Stalking Punishment Act.
Yang said the warrant was issued because “given the seriousness of the crime and the lack of social ties, there is a significant risk that he will flee and a high risk of reoffending.”
A is accused of calling the Seoul Eastern Probation Office on the 1st and threatening to go on a knife rampage at Cheong Wa Dae, the National Police Agency, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and other places, and of leaving his electronic ankle monitor uncharged.
A was found to have been wearing an electronic ankle monitor after a court issued an interim measure ordering him to wear an electronic monitoring device over stalking allegations. He was still wearing the monitor when arrested, and no weapon was reportedly found.
Police responded to a report from the probation office and arrested A. Seoul Jongno Police Station urgently arrested him at about 1:55 p.m. on the 1st, then transferred him to Seoul Songpa Police Station, which was investigating an earlier stalking case.
Seoul Songpa Police Station applied for an arrest warrant for A the previous day, and the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office also sought a warrant from the court that same day.
Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Justice, A had been under police supervision after a court issued an interim measure ordering him to wear an electronic monitoring device over stalking allegations.
