[Financial News] The US Department of Justice said on the 2nd (local time), a day before the midterm elections, that it had charged more than 60 people with election-related crimes. With assessments suggesting Republicans are headed for defeat in the election, the move is seen as an attempt to bolster President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud.
The US Department of Justice announced that day that it had charged 63 people with illegal voting and voter registration, among other election-related crimes. Four undocumented immigrants were among the defendants, but most were green card holders. Because green card holders are not US citizens, it is illegal for them to vote or register as voters.
In a statement that day, Attorney General Todd Blanche said, “This is the largest increase in arrests related to election fraud since President Trump returned to office,” adding, “To restore confidence in the electoral system, we will continue investigating and prosecuting related crimes.”
President Trump repeatedly claimed that the 2020 presidential election was rigged after he lost it, and after winning the 2024 US presidential election, he claimed that support for him had been so overwhelming that it could not have been rigged. Concerns have been raised that the Justice Department’s announcement that day could be exploited to undermine confidence in the results of future midterm elections.
With President Trump’s approval rating recently falling to its lowest level ever, the opposition Democratic Party is expected to have the edge in this midterm election.
