[Financial News] People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok said on the 3rd, “Conservative unity and alliance are ultimately a matter for party members to decide,” adding, “It runs counter to the essence of the matter for unity and alliance to instead deepen conflict.” A proposal for “grand conservative unity,” centered on Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon, was raised that day, and Jang distanced himself from it.
Jang made the remarks after a public briefing on the “Budget to Address People’s Livelihoods” at the party’s central headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, telling reporters, “The basic principle of conservative unity and alliance is ultimately to broaden the support base and increase the People Power Party’s strength.”
“There will be times when unity is needed, and there will be various discussions about what scope it should cover and how it should be pursued. Party members will decide that as well,” he said, adding, “The party leadership will ask members for their views and proceed accordingly.”
Earlier, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and lawmaker Han Dong-hoon attended National Assembly debates 30 minutes apart on the 3rd, each advocating conservative unity. Oh stressed the need for conservative unity encompassing both Jang and Han, saying, “We will seek reconciliation and unity through candid dialogue on how to pool our strength and lay the groundwork for victory in the general and presidential elections.”
Lawmaker Han Dong-hoon stressed, “The Lee Jae Myung administration continues to undermine the democratic republic, so the opposition’s role is important in containing this situation and resolving polarization. I believe we need to join forces with many people, bringing determination and a vision to solve this problem.” Lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun also urged Jang to personally exercise leadership to bring about the Oh-Dong-seok alliance (Oh Se-hoon, Han Dong-hoon and Lee Jun-seok).
