[Financial News] Polestar Automotive Korea Limited is bringing forward around 1,000 additional Polestar 4 units to South Korea to meet rising demand for the model, whose sales have remained strong. The company secured some of the units originally slated for sale next year through talks with headquarters and plans to deliver them to customers in the fourth quarter of this year.
According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) on the 3rd, 3,608 Polestar 4s were newly registered from January to September this year. That was the highest figure for any individual all-electric model from a European brand sold in South Korea over the same period. Registrations from January to July also reached 2,658, already exceeding last year’s full-year sales of 2,611.
Polestar’s monthly new registrations in 2026
By month, the Polestar 4 posted strong figures of 684 units in March and 675 in April, before slowing to around 200–400 units a month from May to August. It then rebounded to 688 units in September, driving Polestar’s highest monthly result on record. In September, the Polestar 4 ranked ninth among imported car models and sixth among electric vehicle trims.
Across the brand, Polestar Automotive Korea Limited sold 769 vehicles in September, its best monthly result since entering the South Korean market. That was up 165.2% from the previous month and 113.0% from the same month a year earlier.
Cumulative registrations from January to September totaled 3,719, up 67.0% from the same period a year earlier. The company says this figure has already surpassed last year’s full-year total of 2,957. With only 281 units left to reach the annual sales target of 4,000 set at the start of the year, the company is likely to exceed its goal if the additional units are delivered this year.
Buoyed by strong sales, the Polestar 4 allocation for South Korea this year was fully depleted in October. Industry sources say the average wait from signing a contract to delivery is currently at least three months, and more than 1,000 customers are reportedly awaiting delivery.
Polestar Automotive Korea Limited had been discussing additional supply with its Swedish headquarters and, as a result, secured around 1,000 units from next year’s planned allocation ahead of schedule. The units are expected to be delivered to customers in stages during the fourth quarter, with delivery targeted before the end of the year.
This is not the first time a Polestar 4 supply shortage has emerged. At the end of last year, as delivery wait times grew, Polestar Automotive Korea Limited responded by delivering all vehicles to customers except for the minimum number of display cars, and securing around 1,000 additional units by January this year for phased delivery.
Customers who place a high value on design and performance are cited as a key reason for the model’s success. According to an analysis previously released by Polestar Automotive Korea Limited, 71% of Polestar 4 buyers chose the high-performance dual-motor model, and the average purchase price was around 83 million won. The average customer age was 44.6, 84% were married, and 65% of buyers cited design as a major reason for their purchase.
With these units brought forward, Polestar Automotive Korea Limited plans to minimize any sales gap caused by the depletion of its original allocation while maintaining sales growth through the end of the year.
In September, 81 units of models other than the Polestar 4 were also registered. The company said this was due to customer deliveries of the Polestar 3, its flagship electric performance SUV launched this past July, getting fully underway.
The expanded allocation also comes amid rapid growth in the imported electric vehicle market. According to KAIDA, 132,582 imported electric vehicles were newly registered in South Korea from January to September this year, up 99.8% from the same period a year earlier. Electric vehicles also accounted for 47.4% of the overall imported car market.
Over the same period, Tesla registered 89,148 vehicles, up 104.4%, while BYD registered 20,137, up 578.7%. The two brands had a combined market share of 39.1%. The electrification push by premium brands is also intensifying, with Bentley choosing South Korea as the venue for the Asia debut of its first all-electric vehicle, “Toruka,” and Lexus adding an all-electric model to the new ES.
Ham Jong-seong, CEO of Polestar Automotive Korea Limited, said, “We thank our customers for their interest in and support for the Polestar 4. We will continue working to improve customer satisfaction across Polestar’s products and services, and do our utmost to become a brand that customers in South Korea’s premium electric vehicle market can continue to trust.”
The Polestar 4 is an electric performance coupe featuring a distinctive design without a rear window, a spacious interior, and a maximum output of 400 kW (544 horsepower). It has won awards including “2025 Car of the Year,” “2025 Design of the Year,” and “Jury-Selected Innovative Electric Vehicle” at the 2025 EV Awards. The recently unveiled 2027 Polestar 4 has improved chassis and steering settings to enhance its overall driving refinement, including more responsive steering and a precise sense of control.
