【Financial News, Daegu—Reporter Kim Jang-wook】“I selected him because I believe he is the ideal person to serve as deputy mayor for the economy, capable of creating an economic environment where businesses can invest and grow and breathing life into the struggling local economy.”
Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho made the remarks at the press room in City Hall’s Dongin Government Building on the 3rd and nominated Choi Un-baek, former head of the Future Innovation Growth Office, as the new deputy mayor for the economy. After completing the Senior Policy Course at the National Human Resources Development Institute, Choi is scheduled to be formally appointed to the post on the 23rd.
The new deputy mayor-designate, Choi, is credited with having extensive experience and expertise in industry and the economy, as well as a strong record in fostering future industries, including securing passage of the preliminary feasibility study for the National Robot Test Field and laying the foundation for AI robot autonomous manufacturing.
A graduate of the 38th National Civil Service Examination, Choi began his public service career at the Ministry of Science and Technology in April 1996 and has worked for Daegu City since 2008. He went on to hold a range of key positions in industry and the economy, including head of the Advanced Medical Industry Bureau, head of the Creative Economy Headquarters, head of the Innovation Growth Bureau, head of the Economic Affairs Bureau and head of the Future Innovation Growth Office. In these roles, he planned and implemented key policies to develop Daegu’s industries and revitalize the local economy.
In particular, he demonstrated his policy implementation skills and expertise by leading efforts that included securing passage of the preliminary feasibility study for the National Robot Test Field, winning selection through an open call for the AI Robot Autonomous Manufacturing Flagship Project, promoting AI transformation (AX) at regional hubs, and advancing key projects to strengthen industrial competitiveness.
Mayor Choo said, “The nominee has the experience and expertise gained from directly planning and implementing the city’s industry and economic policies on the ground over the past 20 years, and is someone who has earned deep trust within the organization and recognition for outstanding leadership through smooth communication with staff.”
He added, “At this important juncture, when Daegu’s industrial structure must undergo a major transformation centered on advanced industries such as semiconductors, mobility and healthcare, as well as AX in local manufacturing, I selected the nominee as deputy mayor for the economy after careful consideration.”
Going forward, Choi plans to strengthen communication with local industries and swiftly pursue key policies to secure future growth engines for Daegu, including AX in manufacturing and the development of advanced industries.
He also plans to actively pursue policies to revive the economy that directly affects people’s livelihoods, including support for stable business operations among small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners, and revitalization of alleyway commercial districts. He will devote every effort to injecting vitality into the local economy and laying the groundwork for Daegu’s next leap forward.
