[Financial News] Korean Register of Shipping (KR) said on the 3rd that it will hold the “KR Green Technology Conference 2026” at the Grand Ballroom of Signiel Busan on the afternoon of the 5th.
The conference was organized to discuss strategies for responding to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s greenhouse gas regulations and future eco-friendly ship technologies, including marine small modular reactors (SMRs).
Amid continued uncertainty over international environmental regulations, including the recent postponement of the IMO Net-Zero Framework’s final adoption, major countries are pursuing the development of green shipping corridors that link the supply of eco-friendly fuels with vessel operations. The shipping industry is also showing growing interest in practical decarbonization measures, such as analyzing the efficiency of onboard energy-saving devices and switching to zero-carbon fuels.
The conference will feature two sessions: “Strategies for Responding to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Environmental Regulations” and “Future Technologies for Carbon-Free Shipping.”
The first session will cover developments in IMO mid-term measures and the progress of global green shipping corridor initiatives; the development of “POWER:ING,” a vessel performance analysis platform based on measurement data; and trends in international environmental regulations and ways to improve vessel energy efficiency, including performance evaluation and certification of energy-saving devices.
The second session will share decarbonization strategies and future technology development trends in Korea’s shipping and shipbuilding industries, including challenges and response strategies for marine SMRs, HMM’s current response to greenhouse gas regulations and their strategic implications, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ progress in developing technology for its eco-friendly “HiMSEN” engine.
A total of 10 technical documents will also be distributed at the conference, including KR’s newly published eco-friendly technology guide, “Technologies for Improving Ship Energy Efficiency for the Decarbonization of International Shipping: Principles and Application Guide.”
KR Vice President Kim Dai-heon said, “With uncertainty over international environmental regulations continuing, the shipping industry must prepare at the same time to respond to regulations it faces now and to the future energy transition.” He added, “I hope this conference will provide an opportunity to share a range of decarbonization technologies and response strategies, from green shipping corridors to marine SMRs, and to explore together a sustainable future for the shipping industry.”
