[Financial News] A forum was held in Busan to discuss strategies for localizing radiopharmaceuticals in South Korea. Participants also discussed self-sufficiency in radiopharmaceuticals and strategies for developing next-generation therapeutic radionuclides.
The Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences announced on the 3rd that it had successfully concluded the Fifth Radiopharmaceutical Healthcare Symposium, held from the 30th to the 31st of last month at Nurimaru APEC House in Haeundae District, Busan.

The symposium was held under the theme “Self-Sufficiency in Domestic Radiopharmaceuticals and Strategies for Next-Generation Therapeutic Radionuclides.” It was organized to explore ways to achieve technological self-reliance in South Korea’s radiopharmaceutical sector and advance future precision medicine.
On the first day, discussions focused on two themes: self-sufficiency in domestic radiopharmaceuticals and strategies for next-generation therapeutic radionuclides. Topics included domestic radioisotope production infrastructure, the state of research and development, and strategies for commercializing therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Participants particularly emphasized the importance of securing a stable supply of radioisotopes and achieving self-sufficiency in radiopharmaceuticals by strengthening domestic R&D capabilities.
The second day covered a range of topics, including the development of radiopharmaceutical antibody therapies, precision localized radiation therapy strategies, radiopharmaceutical clinical trials, integrated diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, interventional radiation therapy, and regulatory approvals. At a panel discussion on “Industry-Academia-Research-Hospital Collaboration,” participants shared a range of views on revitalizing the Southeastern Region Radiation Medicine and Science General Industrial Complex and fostering the radiopharmaceutical industry.
The head of Busan City’s Bio-Health Division, who attended the panel discussion, said the city would actively incorporate the various views into its future policies to foster related industries. This also highlighted the importance of collaboration to connect the practical needs of R&D, clinical care, and industry with local government policies.
An institute representative emphasized, “We plan to continue expanding collaboration among industry, academia, research institutions, and hospitals, building on our radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and quality-control infrastructure and our research and clinical capabilities.” The representative added, “With the city’s commitment to policy support and the diverse views from research and industry, we plan to work to create a regional innovation ecosystem that can connect radiopharmaceutical R&D achievements to actual patient care and the creation of new industries.”
Jeong Seung-pil, president of the institute, said, “As society enters a super-aged phase and the number of cancer survivors grows, the importance of precision medicine that selectively targets cancer cells and of radiopharmaceuticals is increasing.” He added, “We hope this symposium will bring together R&D capabilities in South Korea’s radiopharmaceutical sector and, through exchanges and collaboration among experts, help drive the continued development of related industries.”
