[Financial News] LG Display is setting out to establish a systematic natural environment management system with the National Institute of Ecology to conserve biodiversity near its Paju site.
LG Display said on the 3rd that it had signed an MOU the previous day with the National Institute of Ecology, under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE), to conserve and restore ecosystems near its sites and respond to natural capital disclosures (TNFD).
Under the agreement, LG Display will work with the National Institute of Ecology, a specialized institution, to provide ecological information, training and advice for natural capital disclosure assessments, and jointly identify ecosystem conservation and restoration projects near its sites. It plans to incorporate issues identified through the assessments into actual ecosystem protection activities and use the results in its sustainability management disclosures.
To this end, LG Display plans to carry out population restoration efforts for endangered species by creating and managing habitats for endangered red-crowned and white-naped cranes in the Civilian Control Zone within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), adjacent to its Paju site.
In addition, drawing on the National Institute of Ecology’s expertise, LG Display plans to systematically manage environmental information that forms the basis for disclosures and develop more concrete biodiversity conservation activities around its sites.
Natural capital disclosure involves systematically identifying and disclosing the financial risks and opportunities companies face as a result of changes in the natural environment caused by their business activities. It has been gaining traction internationally in recent years.
LG Display Chief Safety and Environment Officer (CSEO) Kim Seong-hui said, “Biodiversity conservation is an important task for companies’ sustainable growth,” adding, “Through our partnership with the National Institute of Ecology, we will systematically assess the impact of business activities on nature and put environmental management into practice in a way that contributes to the conservation of local ecosystems.”
