According to Reuters on the 2nd (local time), a Reuters/Ipsos poll released that day put President Trump’s job approval rating at 32%. That was unchanged from a week earlier and just 1 percentage point above the all-time low of 31% recorded two weeks ago.
Among registered voters, 46% said they would vote for a Democratic candidate in the midterms, 8 percentage points more than the 38% who said they would choose a Republican candidate. However, the Democrats’ lead narrowed by 3 percentage points from the 11-point margin recorded in a poll a week earlier.
In particular, 50% of independents said their vote in this midterm election would be a vote against President Trump. By contrast, just 13% said they were voting to support him. A further 33% said President Trump had no influence on their voting decision.
Reuters explained that although nationwide party support favored Democrats, the actual distribution of seats in the House and Senate could vary depending on contests in each state and district. Republicans have structural advantages in some districts, it said.
The poll was conducted online among 1,765 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of ±2 percentage points.
