People Power Party Supreme Council member Kim Min-su raised suspicions that the media had downplayed coverage of the ballot-verification process conducted on the 28th in connection with the June 3 local elections, and called on Special Counsel Lee Tae-han’s team to use compulsory investigative measures against the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea.
At the Supreme Council meeting on the 2nd, Kim strongly criticized the media, saying, “There is an abundance of evidence of irregular ballots collected in bundles of 100 and by the box, and the ballots submitted directly alone amount to several boxes. Why are the media downplaying the number of irregular ballots by reporting it as 700?”
He then demanded to know, “Are you writing articles after asking even a single question of the people and People Power Party observers who were there?”
In particular, Kim criticized the special counsel’s passive stance, pointing out that the NEC, a target of the investigation, had again retrieved the ballot boxes in which irregular ballots remained.
Kim said, “The target of the investigation is taking back evidence in the case, yet the special counsel says it can’t help because the evidence was submitted voluntarily.” He then pointedly asked, “Can an investigative agency that carries out searches and seizures even in pediatric wards not search and seize a single ballot box where the voting rights of the people of the Republic of Korea are at stake?”
He continued, “Can the public trust the results of Special Counsel Lee Tae-han’s investigation after seeing this? If people needed for the investigation do not cooperate, arrest warrants should be issued, and the matter must be clearly established, even if it means repeatedly applying for warrants to search and seize the ballot boxes,” he stressed.
Finally, Kim again urged the special counsel to conduct a strict and thorough investigation, saying, “To resolve distrust in the electoral system that has fueled conflict for more than 10 years, we must remember that 50 million people are watching.”
