[Financial News]  Actress Lee Mi-sook revealed that she recently started investing in stocks and suffered losses. She had not usually invested in stocks, but, envious of other people’s investment gains, she bought in late and now regrets it.
A video titled “The Inexperienced Sisters’ War, Season 2: Spicy Pork or Soft Tofu? That Is the Question” was released on the YouTube channel “Lee Mi-sook's Sookseureoun Misookssi” on the 30th of last month.
In the video, Lee Mi-sook expressed her frustration over her stock investments. When a member of the production team remarked, “You had a lot yesterday, huh?”, Lee Mi-sook replied, “Don’t bother me right now. The stocks have me completely...”
Lee Mi-sook also joked to the production team, “The house I was going to buy you is gone.” She then regretted starting to invest so late, saying, “I’d never invested in stocks in my life, so why did I jump in at my age?”
The stock-investing fervor among people around her was what led her to decide to invest. Lee Mi-sook admitted, “If you don’t invest in stocks, I feel like a criminal, and I’m gullible on top of that—I can’t stand seeing other people make money.” She added, “Even if I go bust, let’s at least buy some snacks.”
Broadcaster Do Kyung-wan has also said that he lost most of the profits he had made from stock investments. In May, on his YouTube channel, Do Kyung-wan explained that he started investing because he felt he would be left behind if he didn’t join the stock-investing craze. But after stock prices plunged, he said he had given back nearly all the profits he had made.
After a recent rally, the domestic stock market fell sharply as October began.
According to the Korea Exchange (KRX), the KOSPI closed at 7,003.74 on October 2, breaking through the 7,000 mark. It then turned downward, falling as low as 5,469.47 on the 26th of the same month. The closing price on the 30th was 5,730.74, and the index fell 16.19% over October.
Foreign investors net sold shares worth 18.676 trillion won on the KOSPI market over October.
By contrast, individual investors continued buying even as share prices fell. On October 30, while foreign investors net sold more than 1 trillion won, individual investors net bought at least 700 billion won.
The securities industry sees earnings at major U.S. technology companies, the profitability of investments related to artificial intelligence (AI), and whether foreign investors return to the domestic stock market as key factors that will affect share prices going forward.
While some investors expect the market to rise further, others are concerned that share prices may fall more. There are warnings that losses could grow if people buy stocks late in pursuit of short-term profits or borrow money to invest.
