【Financial News, Jeju = Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 Jeju National University’s affiliated animal hospital has expanded its facilities to about 2.5 times their previous size, investing 12.68 billion won. The expansion of facilities for specialized veterinary care and clinical veterinary education has also strengthened the foundation for animal healthcare in Jeju Province.
According to Jeju National University on the 2nd, the expansion project for its affiliated animal hospital, funded by the Ministry of Education’s national university facilities budget, was completed in December last year. The project, which began in December 2023, increased the hospital’s gross floor area from 1,889.9 sqm to 4,736.25 sqm. The building was also expanded from one basement level and two above-ground floors to one basement level and three above-ground floors.
In particular, the hospital secured a separate 155.8-sqm space for radiation therapy. Jeju National University has continued to expand its specialized care facilities, introducing computed tomography (CT) equipment in 2014, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment in 2021, and a radiation therapy machine in 2025.
The expansion is significant because it improves access to specialized animal healthcare in Jeju, which is separated from the mainland, and strengthens the College of Veterinary Medicine’s clinical training and research capabilities.
A total of 28 people currently work at the affiliated animal hospital, including seven clinical professors and 12 residents. Jeju National University plans to use the expanded facilities to strengthen specialized care and expand education and research in One Health, a field that addresses the health of people, animals, and the environment together.
Jeju National University will hold an expansion ceremony on November 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s main auditorium and the lobby of the affiliated animal hospital.
Ju Hong-gu, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Jeju National University, said, “With the goals of better care, better education, and better animal welfare, I will strive to help the affiliated animal hospital develop into a Jeju-style hub for animal healthcare and clinical education that grows alongside the local community.”
