【Financial News Jeju = Jeong Yong-bok, Correspondent】 Elections to choose the next presidents of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sports Council and the Jeju City and Seogwipo City Sports Councils will be held in succession on December 16 and 23. Election commissions in Jeju are providing guidance on candidate registration and campaign procedures while stepping up efforts to prevent and crack down on illegal activities, including vote-buying.
According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Election Commission on the 2nd, the election for the 40th president of the Jeju Provincial Sports Council will be held on December 16, while elections for the presidents of the Jeju City and Seogwipo City Sports Councils will take place on the 23rd of the same month.
These elections are part of the process of forming the next leadership to oversee sports administration in Jeju. The provincial sports council president will serve a role encompassing sports associations across Jeju and the broader sports community, while the presidents of the two administrative city sports councils will be responsible for promoting local recreational sports and operating sports organizations.
Ahead of the election, the provincial election commission will hold a candidate briefing for the provincial sports council president election at 2 p.m. on the 6th in the committee room on the commission’s fourth floor.
A briefing for the Jeju City Sports Council president election will be held at 2 p.m. on the 12th in the committee room on the first floor of the Jeju City Election Commission. A briefing for the Seogwipo City Sports Council president election will also take place at 2 p.m. that day in the committee room on the third floor of the Seogwipo City Election Commission.
The briefings will explain candidate registration procedures, how to complete the required forms, and permitted campaign methods to prospective candidates and people involved in the elections. They will also cover the selection and reporting procedures for observers at voting and ballot counting, as well as actions restricted or prohibited during campaigning.
Sports council president elections are administered by the Election Commission under delegation to manage elections for public organizations and other bodies. Separate legal standards apply to candidate registration and to who may campaign, the campaign period, and campaign methods, so prospective candidates need to check the requirements in advance.
The provincial election commission and the two administrative city election commissions are stepping up guidance to prevent illegal activities that may occur during campaigning. In particular, they plan to take firm action under a zero-tolerance policy against serious violations of election rules, including offering money or gifts.
