[Financial News, Jeju = Reporter Jeong Yong-bok] Kim Yena, a 10th-grade student at Korea International School (KIS Jeju), won the Minister of Education Award, the top prize at the national speech contest, for an English speech conveying Yu Gwan-sun’s spirit of independence to the world.
According to KIS Jeju on the 2nd, Kim Yena won the top prize in the English division of the Yu Gwan-sun Patriotic Youth National Speech Contest, held on October 31 at Bright Nuri Hall at the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province.
Kim Yena delivered an English speech on the theme of “Taking Yu Gwan-sun to the World.” Comparing Yu Gwan-sun with France’s Joan of Arc, she stressed that the history of Korea’s independence movement and its spirit of striving for freedom should be widely known in the international community as well.
The contest is a nationwide speech event that has been held over the years to introduce young people to Yu Gwan-sun’s patriotism. Its Korean and English divisions provide a platform for young people to convey the historical significance of the independence movement in their own language.
Kim also competed at a world event this year as a member of the Republic of Korea national cheerleading team. She plans to continue promoting Yu Gwan-sun’s spirit and the history of Korea’s independence movement around the world.
