【Financial News, Ulsan—Reporter Choi Soo-sang】 Taking advantage of the excitement surrounding professional baseball’s postseason, groups of online ticket scalpers who snapped up large numbers of tickets and resold them for hundreds of times their face value have been caught by police in a series of arrests.
Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Cyber Investigation Division said on the 2nd that it had booked 24 people, including A, a man in his 30s, without detention on suspicion of obstruction of business and violating the National Sports Promotion Act.
A and the others are suspected of using macro programs from 2022 until recently to secure tickets to professional baseball games, including Korean Series games, and resell them on social media, pocketing a total of 2.2 billion won.
The investigation found that they sold Korean Series tickets with a face value of 81,000 won for as much as 8.93 million won, or 110 times the face value. Police froze 2.1 billion won in criminal proceeds through pre-indictment confiscation and preservation measures.
Ulsan Police Agency also arrested a man in his 30s, identified as A, and is investigating him on suspicion of violating the National Sports Promotion Act. He allegedly obtained 20 tickets for postseason games through an online ticketing site last October and resold them on a ticket-trading platform for 2.5 million won—four times their face value.
Ulsan police launched their investigation after receiving a request to investigate from the Seoul Olympic Memorial National Sports Promotion Corporation. Through detailed analysis of evidence, including ticket reservation and transaction records, they arrested the suspect at the location where the crime was committed.
Police have identified two more people who allegedly conspired in the scheme and are expanding their efforts to track them down.
Ulsan Police Agency Chief Choi Bohyun stressed, “Online ticket scalping is a clearly illegal act that deprives fans of the opportunity to attend games,” adding, “We will investigate habitual and commercial-scale illicit resale rigorously.”
