The Youth Urban Regeneration Specialist Training Program is an initiative to foster professional, hands-on urban regeneration talent active in Busan, with seven Busan-based universities participating. After completing urban regeneration-related courses at their respective universities and then finishing BMC’s advanced course, young people are certified by the city as Youth Urban Regeneration Specialists.

Launched in 2019 as the first program of its kind nationwide, the initiative had produced a total of 783 youth urban regeneration specialists by last year. The city offers them opportunities to gain work experience at urban regeneration firms and other organizations.
This year, 243 people completed the general course, while a total of 128 people in 43 teams completed the advanced course. Of these, 126 are expected to be certified as the eighth cohort of Youth Urban Regeneration Specialists.
This year’s advanced course focused on “Urban Issues in Busan Proposed by Young People: Solutions and Revitalization Plans.” Students from seven universities, including Pusan National University, Korea Maritime and Ocean University, and Dong-A University, worked in teams of two to five.
The participating teams completed their projects after preparing project plans, conducting field research, and receiving two rounds of consultations with outside experts. Fourteen teams whose projects were selected as outstanding after passing the first-round reviews at their respective universities then took part in this presentation contest.
Dong-A University’s “Yangmal” team won the grand prize. The gold prize went to Pusan National University’s “Urban Housing Development” team, while the silver prizes went to Dong-A University’s “Donguk and Friends” team and Dong-Eui University’s “Myeongdong” team. The bronze prizes went to Kyungsung University’s “Youth Renew,” Dongseo University’s “Market On,” Pusan National University’s “Gyeonggyeong,” and Tongmyong University’s “Jinhyeok and the Kids.”
BMC President Shin Chang-ho said, “I hope projects shaped by young people’s fresh perspectives will become a new driving force for urban regeneration in Busan,” adding, “We will continue to support local young people so they can grow into urban regeneration professionals.”[email protected] Byun Ok-hwan Reporter
