[Financial News]  The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has begun checking the disaster response systems of the central government and local authorities in preparation for heavy snow and cold waves this winter. The ministry will share the weather outlook for this winter and plans for clearing snow from roads, and discuss ways for agencies to cooperate to minimize casualties and traffic disruptions caused by heavy snow and cold waves.
MOIS will hold the “2026 Natural Disaster Workshop” at the Yeosu Expo Convention Center from the 2nd to the 3rd, with around 340 natural disaster officials from central and local governments in attendance.
The workshop was organized ahead of the start of the main winter natural disaster preparedness period to review the response systems of relevant agencies and strengthen on-the-ground response capabilities.
MOIS will share its plans for winter heavy snow and cold wave measures and its response strategy going forward. The Korea Meteorological Administration will present the weather outlook for this winter, while the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will present its plans for clearing snow from roads. Based on these presentations, the agencies will review their coordination system.
The workshop will also review the response to the storms and floods, heat waves and drought that occurred this summer. The aim is to share examples of effective disaster response from different regions and apply response experience gained in the field to preparations for winter disasters.
Yongkyun Kim, head of MOIS’s Natural Disaster Management Office, said, “Heavy snow and cold waves in winter can cause major disruptions to people’s daily lives and can also lead to casualties, so thorough advance preparations are more important than anything else.” He added, “We will do our utmost to ensure that people can get through the winter safely by working closely together across central and local governments and further strengthening on-the-ground response capabilities.”
