【Financial News | Daegu = Kim Jang-wook, Staff Reporter】Daegu City and local lawmakers put their heads together to resolve key issues, including Daegu–Gyeongbuk (TK) administrative integration and construction of a new airport.
On the 2nd, Daegu City said Mayor Choo Kyung-ho had met with local lawmakers at the National Assembly Members' Office Building (Seminar Room 1) for a budget policy consultation and that they had agreed to work together during the National Assembly's budget and bill review process to resolve key issues and secure additional national funding.
Mayor Choo stressed, "With National Assembly budget and bill reviews approaching, this is a time when the city and local political circles must pool their strength and wisdom even more. In addition to securing national funding to overhaul the Daegu economy, strengthen growth potential and revive the people's livelihoods, major policy issues such as administrative integration and construction of a new airport must also be resolved swiftly."
Kim Seung-soo, chair of the People Power Party's Daegu City chapter, also said, "With the city's finances more difficult than ever, the city and local lawmakers must make every effort during next year's National Assembly budget review. I will also do my utmost in the National Assembly to help resolve local issues."
They held in-depth discussions on 11 major policy issues and 54 projects requiring national funding.
The city secured the inclusion of a record 9.7855 trillion won in the government's 2027 budget proposal. It plans to work flat out with local lawmakers during the upcoming reviews by the National Assembly's standing committees and the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts (SCBA) to meet its goal of securing at least 10 trillion won in national funding.
Mayor Choo requested, "We must make every effort right through the National Assembly review process to secure as much national funding as possible for resolving key regional issues and fostering future industries. I ask local lawmakers, too, to join us as one team and work alongside us."
To that end, as soon as the members of the SCBA subcommittee are confirmed, the city plans to set up a base camp for securing national funding in the offices of the relevant lawmakers. It will operate not merely as a channel for budget-related responses, but as a field-based collaboration platform where the city and lawmakers can share major regional policy priorities and jointly develop response strategies.
Meanwhile, the city discussed as major policy issues the relocation and construction of a new airport through its transition to a state-led project; passage within the year of a special act for administrative integration; relocation of the second round of public institutions to Daegu; selection through a public contest for a multipurpose domed stadium for sports and performances; stronger support for firefighting capacity; and a major expansion of national funding for fire services.
