[Financial News] LG Uplus's Pyeongchon 2 Center in Anyang-si, Gyeonggi Province, has received an international-standard certification that evaluates systems for managing energy use. As AI data centers (AIDCs) proliferate and power and cooling efficiency become increasingly important, the company is also pursuing the adoption of outside-air cooling and liquid-cooling technologies.
LG Uplus said on the 2nd that Pyeongchon 2 Center had received ISO 50001 certification, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for energy management systems. ISO 50001 sets out the systems and operational requirements organizations need to manage energy use and continuously improve energy performance.
Completed in 2023, Pyeongchon 2 Center has three basement levels and nine above-ground floors. LG Uplus is reducing energy use by using a cooling system that harnesses cold outside air and optimizing the operation of its cooling equipment. Its own cooling technology was incorporated from the design stage to manage heat generated by servers.
LG Uplus is working to replace equipment with high-efficiency models, improve cooling operations and transition to renewable energy at major business sites, including data centers. It is also improving the energy efficiency of servers and power equipment and gradually introducing high-efficiency equipment.
Next-generation cooling technologies designed to handle high-heat-output AI servers are also being tested at Pyeongchon 2 Center. The center is testing methods such as Direct-to-Chip cooling, which delivers coolant directly to a server's graphics processing unit (GPU) to remove heat.
Lee Woo-jung, head of AIDC Operations at LG Uplus, said, "This certification is the result of our efforts to systematically manage energy use and improve efficiency at key facilities, including data centers," adding, "We will expand our energy-saving efforts and transition to renewable energy."
