According to the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center of the Korea Heritage Service on the 2nd, the Sareung History and Culture Hall in Jingun-eup, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, has completed its exhibition revamp and will welcome visitors starting on the 3rd. The exhibition is organized around three themes: the history of Sareung, the life of Queen Jeongsun, and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty as a World Heritage site.
Sareung is the tomb of Queen Jeongsun (1440–1521), one of the 40 Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009. After Queen Jeongsun died, her tomb was built in the burial ground of the Haeju Jeong clan, the family into which Danjong’s elder sister, Princess Gyeonghye, had married. In 1698, under Sukjong of Joseon, Danjong and Queen Jeongsun were restored to their former status, and the tomb was elevated to the status of a royal tomb.
“The History of Sareung” explains how Queen Jeongsun’s tomb became a royal tomb. It compares in a video the features of Danjong’s Jangneung and Sareung, which became royal tombs that same year, and uses documentary materials to tell the story of the Haeju Jeong clan, which has safeguarded Sareung. The kiosk also lets visitors explore different parts of Sareung.
“The Life of Queen Jeongsun” recounts the queen’s life through a timeline and animation: after being separated from Danjong, she lived alone until her death. The timeline also includes Danjong’s life and the process of building Sareung.
A 7.6-meter-wide screen installed on a wall at the back of the exhibition room shows the animation “Where Longing Lingers, Sareung,” featuring the voice of Park Jeong-ja. Visitors can use the kiosk to look up and read historical records about Queen Jeongsun’s life, featured in the timeline and animation.
“World Heritage: Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty” and “Explore All the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty” introduce the distribution and history of the 40 royal tombs and their value as a World Heritage site. Detailed information about each tomb is available on the kiosk.
