[Financial News] As school staff face growing workloads due to violations of teachers’ rights, malicious complaints and job-related stress, Hanwha General Insurance is expanding coverage for risks in educational settings. It supports the protection of school staff’s rights and their health by covering legal costs from the initial reporting stage of a violation of teachers’ rights, as well as mental and job-related conditions, including depression and panic disorder.
Hanwha General Insurance Co., Ltd. said on the 2nd that it had launched an insurance product exclusively for school staff, tailored to the characteristics of their jobs and life cycles.
Hanwha General Insurance signed a business agreement with the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations (KFTA) and developed specialized coverage reflecting the nature of the profession and staff members’ life cycles, based on interviews with current school staff.
The main coverage is for harm caused by violations of teachers’ rights and legal costs. The Education Activity Infringement Benefit rider provides coverage from the initial stage, when a report is filed with an education office following an infringement of educational activities. If the Teachers’ Rights Protection Committee subsequently confirms that an infringement occurred, it pays up to KRW 3.9 million. It also covers attorney fees for criminal proceedings related to child abuse involving school staff and for teacher appeals.
The “My Lawyer” legal consultation service, offered in partnership with the Korean Bar Association (KBA), is also available. Users can consult guidance on handling workplace legal issues such as teacher appeals and child abuse, and can also speak with specialist lawyers.
Mental health coverage has also been expanded. The stress-related specific mental illness diagnosis benefit rider pays up to KRW 3 million for a diagnosis of depression, panic disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder, and also provides additional coverage for medication treatment.
Coverage tailored to the working conditions of school staff has also been introduced. For accidents occurring in January, February, July and August, which include school vacation periods, the policy covers disability resulting from injuries during specified periods, as well as diagnosis of fractures and burns. Job-related conditions such as vocal cord nodules, dry eye and carpal tunnel syndrome are covered through surgery and hospitalization benefits for specified lifestyle-related conditions.
Eligible applicants include teachers, professors and administrative staff working at national, public and private schools nationwide. Those who purchase Hanwha General Insurance’s Signature Women’s Health Insurance or Hanareum Comprehensive Insurance can choose a plan exclusively for school staff.
A Hanwha General Insurance spokesperson said, “We wanted to support school staff’s everyday lives and educational activities so that their heartfelt dedication to students would not be shaken by practical difficulties,” adding, “We will continue to develop differentiated products and services for a range of professions facing work-related challenges.”
