Drive along the winding coastal road with the blue sea beside you. Deep-blue waters and islands large and small stretch out beyond the window, catching your eye. South Gyeongsang Province’s Namhae County is a popular driving destination where the scenery along the way is more captivating than reaching the destination.

German Village in Samdong-myeon is the starting point of the trip. Its exotic buildings with red roofs blend with the sea to create a distinctive landscape. Head south after exploring the village, and Sangju Silver Sand Beach comes into view. Its crescent-shaped white-sand beach, lush pine grove and calm waters make it a lovely place to pull over and take a break.

The highlight of a drive in Namhae is Mulmi Coastal Road. This coastal route from Samdong-myeon to Mijo-myeon reveals a new seascape each time it winds around a bend. Blue sea stretches along one side, while mountain foothills and fishing villages line the other. Taking a moment to stop at one of the many lookout points and gaze out at the sea is also an essential part of the experience.

Namhae’s appeal lies in the scenery shaped by nature rather than in flashy tourist facilities: the exotic atmosphere of German Village, the relaxed feel of Sangju Silver Sand Beach and the refreshing coastal vistas of Mulmi Coastal Road. Simply driving slowly with the sea beside you is enough to make a trip to Namhae truly special. Photos and video by Seo Dong-il
