[Financial News] An account circulating online has sparked outrage among internet users: a guardian allegedly put a spoon the child had put in their mouth and sucked on straight back into the communal cutlery holder at a restaurant.
On the 1st, a post titled “Why No-Kids Zones Are Being Created” appeared on Threads, a social networking service (SNS), and major online communities. The author, identified as A, said they had recently visited a Thai restaurant in Gwanggyo New Town, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi Province, and were upset by the unhygienic and irresponsible behavior of a guardian and child at the next table.
According to A, two women were dining with a child at the neighboring table. Throughout the meal, the child took spoons from the communal cutlery holder on the table and threw them onto the floor. A said they saw as many as five spoons, but the guardians neither picked up the utensils nor disciplined the child. A claimed that they even moved the holder closer to the child so it would be easier for the child to reach.
The most serious issue was the guardian’s response, which disregarded basic hygiene. A said, “The child took spoons out of the holder and sucked on them or played by banging them on the table, but the guardian put a saliva-covered spoon straight back into the communal cutlery holder.” In effect, the spoon was put back among utensils shared by many diners without any consideration of the risk of contamination.
The guardians’ careless behavior continued after the meal. After paying, they began playing with bubbles with the child just outside the restaurant, in front of the outdoor terrace. A said, “We were eating when bubbles carried by the wind landed on the father’s shoulder. Thankfully, they didn’t get into the food, but it was an unpleasant experience right to the end.”
A explained that before leaving the restaurant, they approached a staff member to prevent other diners from being affected and reported what had happened: “A spoon the child had put saliva on went back into the cutlery holder, so I think you may need to wash all the utensils in it again.”
After the account became public, strong criticism arose online. Internet users condemned the behavior, saying, “Putting a saliva-covered utensil back with the communal tableware is clearly inconsiderate and unhygienic,” “Isn’t it basic common sense to bring utensils just for your child when you go out?” and “I completely understand how small-business owners feel when they declare their establishments no-kids zones because of selfish behavior like that.”
There was also an outpouring of self-reflection among other people raising children. One internet user expressed bitterness, saying, “Because of some irresponsible parents like that, even the majority of considerate parents who wipe down the area with wet wipes before leaving are treated as a nuisance and have to walk on eggshells.”
