【Financial News | Yeosu = Hwang Tae-jong】GS Caltex Yeulmaru Art Center has drawn attention for creating and operating a total of four Creative Studios on Jangdo Island, the “Island of Art,” since 2020, using the home sites of former residents.
In particular, it has won praise for continuing a series of solo exhibitions to showcase the artistic work of artists who have worked in the Creative Studios.
According to GS Caltex Yeosu Plant on the 2nd, a solo exhibition by sound artist Kim Seo-ryang, a resident artist in the seventh cohort of the Creative Studio program, is on view at the Jangdo Island Exhibition Hall at GS Caltex Yeulmaru Art Center through the 22nd.
The seventh-cohort Creative Studio resident artists’ exhibition is a series of solo shows by An Min-hwan, Park Geum-man, Jung Hye-ryeong, Kim Seo-ryang and Yoon Dong-cheon, who have worked at the Creative Studios this year.
Kim Seo-ryang’s solo exhibition is themed “Soundscapes of relationships shaped by islands and people, factories and nature.” It explores the diverse traces of lives and stories of places accumulated in Yeosu through sound and video. In particular, in commemoration of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, the exhibition connects landscapes from different places—as if they were a single island—including the voices of people who have lived on Yeosu’s islands, memories of lives carried on at Aeyangwon, and shifting lights in the industrial complex. It casts an artistic eye on the lives and relationships held within each of them.
“It was meaningful work that looked at Yeosu’s landscape, shaped together by industry and the city, from a cultural perspective, going beyond art creation alone,” Kim Seo-ryang said. “I completed the work hoping it would remain a proud scene that people would remember in the future when recalling Yeosu’s industries and islands.”
A GS Caltex Yeulmaru Art Center representative said, “This is a very meaningful exhibition in which a Creative Studio resident artist explores the relationship between the local community and nature through sounds and video from local industrial sites, islands and Aeyangwon, where history runs deep.” The representative added, “We hope you will experience the special artistic harmony created by industry and nature amid Jangdo Island’s beautiful autumn scenery.”
A GS Caltex Yeosu Plant representative said, “The exhibition video captures the process of producing and shipping products, from GS Caltex’s crude oil pier through Plant 1 and Plant 2 to the product pier. It also features the plant at dawn, in the afternoon and at night, as well as the various sounds of processes and equipment at key sites, pipelines and distillation towers.” The representative added, “It will be a good opportunity for people preparing for careers in the petrochemical industry and members of the public to experience the inside of a petrochemical plant and its working environment, which are not easy to encounter in everyday life.”
