[Financial News] A man in his 30s who rammed his truck into the gate of a guard post at a military base, saying he would report to the soldier’s superior that the soldier had had an affair with his wife, was given a suspended prison sentence.
According to legal sources on the 1st, Judge Kim Su-jeong of the single-judge Criminal Division 2 at the Suwon District Court’s Yeoju Branch sentenced A, who was indicted on charges including violating the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act and drunk driving, to three years in prison, suspended for five years, and ordered him to perform 500 hours of community service.
A was brought to trial on charges of driving his truck while heavily intoxicated at around 1 a.m. on June 14 and ramming and smashing the gate of a guard post at a military base in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. At the time, his blood alcohol concentration was 0.169%, a level that would result in revocation of his driver’s license.
A went to the military base while drunk to report to the soldier’s superior that the soldier had previously had an affair with his wife. He later demanded that the gate be opened so he could enter the base. When his request was refused after an argument, he drove his truck straight into the gate.
Investigators found that A had received a settlement from the soldier who had previously had an affair with his wife and had promised to keep the matter secret. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the damaged gate resulted in property losses of approximately 5.5 million won, investigators found.
The court explained its reasons for the sentence, saying, “He went so far as to smash his way through the main gate of a military installation and continued to cause a disturbance,” while also noting, “We took into account that he had no other criminal record apart from one drunk-driving conviction and that he supports his family.”
