[Financial News] ‘Kangarooization Project’ by writer Ranigo and artist 906 will receive the grand prize at the 24th Korea Creative Comics Contest. Eight works from a range of genres, including family stories, science fiction (SF) and zombie stories, were selected as winners.
According to the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency on the 2nd, the awards ceremony for the contest, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the agency, will be held on the 3rd in the screening room on the first floor of the Korea Manhwa Museum in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with an event marking the 26th Comic Day.
The grand-prize-winning ‘Kangarooization Project’ was praised for bringing familiar material to life with a contemporary sensibility and demonstrating outstanding drawing and direction. It will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award and 20 million won in prize money. The total prize money for all winning works is 70 million won.
Harang’s ‘Deep Blue Spring (Youth)’ was selected for the Excellence Award, and Sangeogorae’s ‘Love Collage’ for the Merit Award.
Five works received Encouragement Awards: Gobeon’s ‘My Happy Guardian Angel’; Hip-hop Sinseon’s ‘Coffin Artist Kim Min-ji’; Seo Yong-nam’s ‘Fuse Box’; Bapsot’s ‘The Stroke Continues’; and Lee Ye-rim’s ‘Not Looking for a Puppy.’
The contest seeks to discover short comics and cartoons with popular appeal and artistic merit, and to support creators’ growth. This year, winners were selected after three rounds of judging, with comic artists and aspiring creators aged 18 or older eligible to participate.
Eligible entries were original works suitable for all ages, with no history of formal serialization or publication. There were no restrictions on subject matter or theme.
The agency plans to compile the winning works into a collection, distribute it to companies involved in comic content, and use it at business consultation events and elsewhere. It also plans to offer winners opportunities to take part in future consultation events, supporting the commercialization of their works and the expansion of their creative activities.
“We will continue to create opportunities for creators to fully demonstrate their skills and individuality,” said Baek Jong-hun, president of the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency.
